Trip to Karkala - Karla

Karkala is a town located in tulu nadu i.e., Mangalore. The place is around 55 kms far from Mangalore city and it takes aroun d 1.5 hours journey to reach Karkala from Mangalore. There are plenty of buses which will ply to this place. Frequency of the bus is every 10 or 15 minutes.From Bangalore it is around 390 kms.You can observe that most of the people will be conversing in Tulu language which is the local language of this region.

Earlier names for the town includes:

Kari Kal which means black stone in Tulu language

Kari Kola - which means Elephant lake

During the rule of Jains the town was called as Pandya Nagari
Localites call town as Karla

Chronicles of the town dates back to 10th century. Karkala is famous for some historical temples and some places.During the rule of Jains the town was called as Pandya Nagari. Initially Kings from Alupa dynasty were ruling this region later on it was conquered and ruled by Santaras and then followed by vijayanagara Empire.King Veera Bhairava constructed Basadis in Karakala during his rule. King Veera Bhairava had two sons namely Ramanatha and Veerapandya. There is a lake being created called Ramasamudra in his memory.
